How do I prepare for rhinoplasty?
Before rhinoplasty, Dr. Blumenauer works with you to create your ideal nose shape and size. He also gives you instructions to prepare for the procedure. In general, Dr. Blumenauer may ask you to take the following actions:
- Quit smoking.
- Adjust your medications.
- Stop taking certain supplements.
- Avoid taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers.
- Get lab work.
You may have additional preparatory steps depending on your medical history and aesthetic goals.
What happens during rhinoplasty?
After administering anesthesia, Dr. Blumenauer will perform your procedure in one of two ways: open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty.
Open Rhinoplasty
During open rhinoplasty, Dr. Blumenauer reshapes the nose through an incision in the columella — the tissue that divides the nostrils. Open rhinoplasty allows for unmatched control and precision to correct structural concerns.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty involves making incisions inside the nose so there is no visible scarring. This technique is ideal for individuals with mild structural concerns.
What happens after rhinoplasty?
Dr. Blumenauer will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you protect your nose after surgery. Swelling and bruising from rhinoplasty can take several weeks to subside. While initial improvements are visible after a few weeks, full results can take several months. Dr. Blumenauer encourages patients to wait at least one year after rhinoplasty for swelling to subside completely.
